Introduction
What is General Text?
General Text is a collaborative workspace for plain text. It gives you a place to create, organize, and edit text files, then keeps them in sync across your devices and with your teammates in real time.
Want to look around first? Try a live demo workspace: no account, nothing to install, right in your browser.
It's also more than a file editor. General Text is built on the idea that plain text is the most durable and portable format for knowledge. On top of that foundation, it adds apps: lightweight web tools that plug into your workspace and give you tailored ways to work with your files, from a spreadsheet view of a CSV to a full editor for your own format.
Together, they turn a folder of text into a personal or team knowledge environment where your files stay living documents, made interactive through custom tools but never locked into one program.
Philosophy
General Text is built on a few principles:
- Plain text first. Your content is stored as plain text files, not locked in a proprietary format. You can always read, export, and process your data with any tool.
- Real-time by default. Every edit syncs instantly to all connected devices and collaborators. There's no "save and refresh"; changes just appear.
- Composable tools. Instead of building one monolithic editor, General Text provides a platform where small, focused apps can plug in and work with your files. Build the tools you need, or install ones others have made.
